The
Ultimate LEGO Vehicle Contest
ULV
III: 6 October 2002
The
Aesthetics Contest
This year's ULV contest featured an "open building period" which
gave contestants as much time as they chose to spend on their vehicles.
How did that pay off in terms of performance and aesthetics? You be the
judge.
Top Performers: 1) Mike Rayhawk,
2) Jonathan, 3) Sophie, Bryan (tie)
The
Speed Contest
The new track constructed for this year's competition significantly reduced
friction, allowing greater speeds at a less steep slope. While its shorter
side walls provided less protection against toppling, most contestants
had witnessed enough topples in previous years to design more stable vehicles.
Unborn Om's little police car
gains a speedy surprise win as Brendan's behemoth wheel lumbers down the
track, only gaining momentum toward the end.
Lauren's Hammer of Doom throws its vehicle off-balance, beginning a
chain of events that would turn ugly fast, and leave Lauren hurrying
to rebuild her vehicle for the next competition.
Top Performers: 1) Mark,
2) Sophie, 3) Lila
The
Distance Contest
Both the use of a faster track and contestants' creation of better performing
vehicles meant we had to modify the way this contest was run. So many
vehicles achieved the maximum possible distance in the first round,
that we had to keep lessening the steepness of the track for each successive
round.
Jonathan's Metawheel covers impressive ground.
Kathy's sad little vehicle goes nowhere.
Top Performers: 1) Mark,
2) Brendan, 3) Satyam
